The weather forecasters got yesterday correct, dry morning, wet afternoon, dry evening. There was still some daylight around when we were setting off. Good to see Dennis calling down. We are missing the McMullans on these night runs.
Great dry spin down the tow path with John S and Garry W. Good pace down the path, crossed over the footbridge and headed for the Ring. I was struggling to keep up with the two lads, died a death on some of the hills. No sprint across the ring tonight. Down to Minnowburn and headed for Shaw's. Met Davy Y. He tried to jump on our back wheel but we were going reasonably hard and, as this was his first time out with us this year, he was struggling. [He also found out later he had a slow puncture which didn't help]
Usual run through the trees. John S caught me on the first mini climb despite my head start. All set off towards vomit ridge. Garry took off early for the climb, John following. I got my timing right and caught both of them. Met Davy Y again on the climb. At the top John S was nearly making this climb live up to its name!!
A quick spin around the loop. I was determined to get back to the car park first so I knew I had to get a gap on John. It worked. John wasn't far behind though, however Garry didn't show up. After a minute or two we went back along the path to find him. As he had lost the wheel in front he managed to get lost. All together again and back to the path.
Skipped the Meadows and headed for Shaw's. I let Garry and John S go up Cardiac hill first as I was tired getting passed by them. Once I started my climb I knew there was something wrong with my back tyre. I pushed on feeling the wheel getting softer. Passing the shadow men I decided that it wasn't the place to change the tube. We set off along one of the new paths. Great fun but with the rear tyre wobbling I eventually had to stop to change the tube. Found the culprit, a thorn.
All off again, the path lead past Mary Peter's. It was the first time we had seen it with its new extension and pavillion. Really looks the job now!
Down past the BMX jumps and out to the path. I was deliberately setting a strong pace back to Lisburn. We were rattling on well but with little conversation. I was keen to keep up the pressure to try to tire the boys. Once we got to the final run it John and I were riding side by side and I could feel Garry on my wheel ready to launch. The sprint didn't come to late but it was fast when it did come. John S couldn't find anymore gears on his Vitus and I had to push hard to make keep away from Garry who was doing his best to come round but I think I got it in the end.
A great run overall. Super night. The bikes were hardly dirty.
Roll on next Thursday!
