If anyone has a problem with a (decent) wheel and needs a rebuild or repair I can wholeheartedly recommend Joe Henry at Velo Cafe in Ormeau Ave. Bfst.
I had a problem with a Shimano Dura Ace rear wheel which was in and out of a major dealer's workshop 3 times due to the replaced spokes coming loose. I was surprised to find they didn't own a spoke tension meter when I asked, as I never felt the spokes were as highly tensioned as when original.
Conversation with Joe:-
Q. Do you have a spoke tension meter? - Oh yes, i'll check it over when doing the job
Q. There was thread lock used on the spoke nipples so hope this won't be a problem? No problem I will probably take all of the nipples off and I use linseed oil as a lubricant which helps tighten them down but then dries in about a week and acts as a thread lock
Q. I think some of the replaced nipples are too long for the spokes and may be the reason they are not tensioning up? No problem if I need to put further threads on the spoke I have the tool to do it.
Q. There is a bit of a 'hop' in the wheel too which the other shop couldn't remove - I'll have a look at that.
I got the wheel back, perfectly true, no 'hop' in it, spokes tensioned up higher than previously, one or two spokes did need to have more threads cut to suit the longer nipple and all were lubricated during assembly.
You might think all of this would have been costly - nah £15!!
This was before christmas and after a few rides all is going well and today I got a text from Joe to ask how the wheel was doing!
This was outstanding customer service hence spreading the word of recommendation in this lengthy post.
Joe and his colleague Sean deal in less common brands of bikes and components (Parlee and Independant Fabrications frames, Lightweight brand wheels etc). They would specialize in building custom wheels to customer specifications.
This is their website:- velocafemagasin.com/
I can't recommend Joe highly enough. These guys are only starting out in business as far as I can tell and what a contrast is this - I contacted a certain East Belfast bike shop popular with some club members last year about this wheel and when I explained the problem received the response 'Factory wheel, wouldn't touch it'
If you have some decent stuff that needs attention, want a decent set of wheels custom built, want components or a look at their Parlee frames or maybe some 4K Lightweights give them a shout.
I have Joe's mobile number if anyone wants it.
