What a superb show put on by all the DCC Members yesterday. Big thanks to all the people who gave up their time over the weekend to help. Especially those who were down both days, some of them all day for both days. There is simply no way such an event could be put on without these same few selfless people. They know who they are.
The comments about the entire race day from all different walks of people down on the day were brilliant to hear. The words I kept hearing were... slick, professional, friendly, organised.
And best of all, my wee girl got a bun.

And best of all, my wee girl got a bun. Massive thanks to all who helped out over the weekend and well done to all who raced. Definately had the atmosphere and set up of a profession cyclocross race! My first cyclocross race ended badly with my rear derailleur deciding to wrap itself around my wheel. Well done to Van Kellett on 4th in the A race and to Reggie who took 3rd in the B race.

Oh yea, as for the race itself...
Had an OK start, was at the tail end of about 10 riders after the mile long straight. I had no panic to get anywhere near the very front as I had already done the maths and knew how long the race was going to be. The conditions would take care of a lot of the opposition I felt. Half a lap in though, a small disaster. Remounting after Gutter Section #1 I hit the brake with my thundering thigh and knocked the pad under the rim locking the wheel solid. A quick dismount and undoing of the straddle wire, punching and swearing got the pad back out into its rightful place, and reconnecting the wire and away we go. Now at the tail end of 30 lads instead of 10. most of whom seem really scared of falling over on the mud.
I resorted to running and ignorance for the first set of Switchbacks and managed to pass quite a few. The second set of switchbacks were wider and longer straights so I was able to Cut people up, ruin their lines and generally be a very unlike-able person for the next few minutes. I had made it back up to round 10th place midway through lap 2 and could see that nobody was massively far away, though the top 2 were showing an impressive "horsing it on" technique and were opening a healthy gap rapidly.
Chipped away a couple more places. One notable place taken in the pits with a seriously swift bike change from Lisa and Carn wheelers Mairead McGurk. Making up time in the pits. Pro! I could see the trio of XMTBs Matt Adair and Banbridge Duo of James Curry and Cameron McIntyre up ahead, fighting it out for 3rd spot. I began to catch Matt who then lit the afterburners and closed up to the other two again leaving me still straggling. That effort seemed to go hard on him though as next lap round I made contact and slipped away. On the 2nd last lap, McIntyre slipped and crashed on the off camber corner and had to fix his bars costing him valuable seconds as Curry then attacked and I moved up to 4th and tried to close him down.
Into the last lap and I can almost touch him, but alas, as is the case with almost every race I have ever entered, bloody children with their insane power to weight and unfaltering self belief prove too much. There was no closing the lad down on the last lap as hard as I tried.
Very happy with 4th given the mechanical and poor first lap.
Very happy I only binned it once. Very happy that happened behind the Timing tent so hardly anyone seen it.
Very Very happy with the amazing support all round the course from club members, wife, siblings and offspring. It turns out I am a right "needy" drama queen. Every time the hurt was coming round a loud Gulder spurred me back on again.
Hard luck to Zak and Lisa on succumbing to Mechanicals of bike and body. BUT!
Well done to Ben Wilson on a Podium topping 1st place in the U14s Well done to Martina Hawkins on a superb 2nd place in the MTB Female race Well done to Richard Cowan on a storming 3rd place in the B race. Well done to Paul Mawhirt being the best of the rest as the B race Mob battled it out to the death.
Well done to all the other club members racing today, some great battles and stories to be told.
Special Mention for Marty McAnulty who narrowly missed out on scalping wee Ben out in the morning race.
